Hey bartender - Another mocktail, please

I have been having fun ordering all kinds of non-alcoholic beers ever since my first introduction to O'Doul's in San Diego. I'm something of a non-alcoholic beer connoisseur now. Since every place we go to seems to have a different (tiny) selection of N.A. beers, I've been forced to branch out a little.

O'Doul's is pretty good. It tastes like a basic domestic light beer and is the most common N.A. beer for a restaurant or bar to have. But I've also come across St. Pauli N.A., which was a bit heavier (and good!). And my all-time favorite, which I have only found at Houston's so far, is the Beck's non-alcoholic beer. I don't think I've ever had a regular Beck's beer, but dang -- the N.A. version is good! So Beck's is on my list of beers to try when I can get back to boozin'.

Mike is always saying how we should get a pack of O'Doul's to keep at home or that he should make me some kind of fun non-alcoholic fruity drink when I feel like throwing back a cocktail. But I figure I'll just save the non-alcoholic beers for a treat when we go out, and I'm pretty uncreative when it comes to non-alcoholic fruity cocktails, so we never really came up with any solutions.

That is, until we saw Sandra Lee's show the other day on the food network (she has a new show about making meals on the cheap). Sandra always includes a cocktail with her meals (she's my kind of woman... she always includes dessert, too). And this time, she did a non-alcoholic version of a watermelon martini. She blended up 4 cups of fresh watermelon and mixed in some simple syrup and lemon juice. It went on ice, was poured into a glass and topped off with some sparkling water. MAN, did it look good! (You can also add vodka if you so choose, and you better believe I'll be drinking that version next summer.)

It just so happened that I had coerced Mike into buying an enormous watermelon just a couple of days before (it was only $2.47! The small watermelons were $2.50! And it was SEEDLESS!). I went to see a movie with a friend on Monday afternoon, and when I came home, this was waiting for me:

He even put it in one of our cruise cocktail glasses! *Sigh.* So this is my new go-to mocktail, especially since we have three huge containers full of cut-up watermelon taking up a ridiculous amount of space in our refrigerator. :)

  2. Yeah, that's one reason why I waited so long before I tried one. I didn't want to consume even the tiniest bit too early on. At this point, I figure the tiny amount in one N.A. beer now and then won't do any harm. :)

  3. yeah, they said you could have wine in the third trimester. i was always afraid. the only alcohol i drank during any was before i knew i was preggo with Kaitlyn ( damn negative test) and at the end of Kyleighs my midwife told me to drink 1-2 oz of wine before bed to stop the horrible ongoing unproductive contrations i was having due to the stents for weeks.
